Southern California is a megapolitan region occupying the southern portion of the State of California, United States of America. The largest metropolitan area is Los Angeles, the nation’s second largest metro area. Other metro areas include San Diego, Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, and the lightly populated El Centro. SoCal is famed for its sunny weather and dramatic Pacific Coastline and well known worldwide area for its cultural diversity. Many tourists travel here for its fine year-round weather along the coast, open dramatic spaces, beaches, and numerous amusement parks. Southern California is a major economic center for the state of California and the United States.
It is a geographic and cultural region that generally comprises California’s 10 southernmost counties. The region is traditionally described as eight counties, based on demographics and economic ties: Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.
The coastal region, stretching from about Santa Barbara, known as “The American Riviera.”, Los Angeles, home to Hollywood studios, fine art in the Getty Center, Griffith Park, and the high-end shops of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. San Diego in the south known for surfing spots and massive Balboa Park, with its world-renowned zoo and museums. Across the bay lies resort city Coronado.
Southern California also includes several offshore islands such as the Channel Islands, deserts such as the Mojave and Colorado, and the largest lake in California, the very salty Salton Sea.
